ADDITIONAL MUSIC EDUCATION RESOURCES
Looking for additional music resources? Check out some of these…

RMF – Reading musical foundation

RMF believes that every child who wishes to be a musician should have the opportunity to do so. In addition to building a lifelong appreciation of the arts, music teaches necessary skills that build creativity, discipline, self-perseverance, self-expression and teamwork. We also believe live music performance makes our community stronger by connecting individuals and making Greater Reading attractive to those in our region and beyond.

PMEA: Pennsylvania music education association

The PMEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of over 3,700 members, dedicated to promoting the musical development of all Pennsylvanians. The organization includes those engaged in music instruction at all levels, from preschool through college and university, as well as those in the music industry, merchandising and publishing. PMEA promotes and supports quality music education, learning and performance as well as promoting and supporting music education in schools and communities. Visit PMEA for more information.

BERKS youth chorus

Berks Youth Chorus is a choral and music education organization with a strong focus on community, friendship, and music performance. Since 1992, the chorus has provided young singers the opportunity to perform in a variety of venues from nursing homes and churches, to concert halls and hospitals. Originally a classical organization, Berks Youth Chorus has expanded its repertoire to include music from a wide array of cultures, time periods, languages and religions. Our singers embrace that music is a celebration that connects people globally and crosses all boundaries.

GETJAZZED

getJazzed is the official music education program of Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, dedicated to building the jazz arts community by advancing education, promoting performance and developing new audiences. Program offerings include workshops for local and regional students, summer camps, jam sessions with professional musicians, and scholastic music festivals. The program is presented by Berks Arts and Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, along with support from many sponsors, supporters and strategic partners who make the program possible.

LOCAL Summer music opportunities

Once school ends, there’s many opportunities to continue working on your students’ music skills.  Here’s just a few. If you know of any that you’d like to share with others, let us know.

BERKS SUMMER BAND INSTITUTE

Do you find it difficult to practice over the summer months? Would you like to meet other musicians from around Berks County with a similar love of band music? Then register for the Berks Summer Band Institute is a multi-generational summer band program for Berks County band musicians!

We have four bands of varying levels for musicians of all ages, including a 1st year band, 2nd year band, middle school band, and high school / adult band, and meet once a week, ending with a concert.  Talk to your band director or contact Mr. Kemmerer at bsbi@ptd.net for more information.

GETJAZZED Summer CAMp with Mike EBEN

For students entering grades 7 through 12. Participants should be able to read music and have some experience playing in jazz style. Drummers should have experience playing basic music styles (swing, rock, etc.) on a drum set.  Learn about Jazz styles through playing and listening, how to improvise using scales and modes, the role of the rhythm section in accompanying and soloing, and how to start your own jazz combo. Contact getjazzed@berksarts.org or visit GETJAZZED for more information.

BERKS SUMMER STRING INSTITUTE

The Berks Summer Stings Institute simply exists to provide an opportunity for students in Berks county Pennsylvania to continue playing and learning about their orchestral sting instrument over the summer. If you or your child lives in Berks County, has studied an orchestral string instrument for about a year to 8 years (they do allow older students too), have access to an instrument, know how to hold a bow and some basic music reading skills, then consider this opportunity.

BERKS SUMMER SING

This week-long camp is open to all young people entering grades 3 through 7. Campers learn music and vocal fundamentals in a fun, engaging and physically active setting. Students sing in small and large groups, explore their voices, improve music literacy, learn choreography and play games. BYC provides all music and education materials and a snack each day. A mini concert for family and friends is presented, on site, on Friday afternoon.  Camp is offered at two different locations and dates. CLICK HERE for more information.
